Daring Way™ / Rising Strong™

I first heard of Brené Brown when I saw her 2010 TEDx Houston talk, The Power of Vulnerability, and she had me at “imperfection” — I so deeply resonated with what she was saying about vulnerability, courage, and letting go of the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that keep from us connecting deeply with ourselves and with the people who matter the most to us. I immediately gobbled up her books I Thought It Was Just Me (2007) and The Gifts of Imperfection (2010) and started putting into practice for myself her concepts of Wholehearted Living (living and loving from a place of true love and belonging) and her research on shame resiliency (the practice of getting up after hard falls). They were such a game-changer for me that I began to incorporate the concepts from Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the way we Live, Love, Parent, and Lead (2012) and her second TED Talk, Listening to Shame, into sessions with clients, regularly quoting Brené and her research.

In 2015, I discovered Brené's training for mental health professionals and became a Certified Daring Way Facilitator™, adding concepts from her book Rising Strong (2015) and her latest book Braving the Wilderness (2017) into individual and couples sessions, as well as workshop intensives.

What I love most about this work is that it wraps words around concepts like shame, resiliency, trust, grief, boundaries, and authenticity and gives us a way to talk about them. This work is not for the faint of heart — we are Trail Blazers in living very counter culturally — daring to be authentically vulnerable, with courage, compassion, connection, integrity, and healthy boundaries instead of perfecting, performing, and people pleasing.
